Passing/Pressure Analysis

Jackson was afforded ample time and space (ATS) on 12 of 37 (32%) drop backs resulting in a pass/sack.  With ATS, he threw for 115 yards (9.6 YPP).

He delivered the ball before pressure could develop (BOQ) 10 times (27%) with 9 complete for 57 yards (5.7 YPP).  He was pressured 15 times (41%), on which he completed 7 passes for 69 net yards (4.6 YPP), 2 sacks.

Jackson also scrambled from a pressure for a 30-yard gain to set up the end-of-half field goal.

By number of pass rushers:

3:  none

4:  21 plays, 155 net yards, 7.4 YPP

5:  11 plays, 66 net yards, 6.0 YPP, 2 sacks

6+:  5 plays, 20 net yards, 4.0 YPP

Coming into the game, the 49ers were among the most infrequent blitzing teams in the NFL (18% for the season), but SF rushed 5+ on 43% of plays on Monday night.

OL Scoring

The Ravens ran 62 scored snaps (excludes accepted penalties which result in no play, kneels, spikes, and special teams plays that result in a run or pass).

Stanley:  Ronnie had another difficult game.  He was party to 5 pressure events (pancaked by DE Bosa at feet of Jackson, ½ pressure, Q2, 11:04; bulled by DE Young, full pressure, Q2, 7:10; bulled by DE Ferrell to flush Jackson right, full pressure, Q2, 1:02; beaten outside by Ferrell to flush Jackson, 1/2 pressure, Q3, 12:13; bulled then shed by Young, ¼ sack, Q4, 11:30).  He also shared a penetration when shed by Bosa (Q3, 14:18).  He was flagged for a face mask on Ferrell (Q2, 0:40) which was his most costly charge of the night.  Of his 7 missed blocks, 5 were losses at the LoS.  He had 1 block in level 2 and delivered 1 pancake.  He connected on all 3 of his pulls.  He had 2 highlights.

Scoring:  54 plays, 41 blocks, 7 missed, ½ penetration, 3 (2 + 2*1/2) pressures, ¼ sack, 1 face mask, 23.5 points (.44 per play).  That’s an F even after a large adjustment for facing Bosa and Young.  Had he not been flagged for the face mask, and simply missed that block instead, he would have graded a high D.

Simpson:  John had his third D in the last 4 games. He drew his 9th penalty of the year with an illegal hands penalty which negated a 20-yard pass to Bateman.  He was party to 3 pressure events (failed to maintain block on DT Hargrave, 1/3 sack, Q2, 2:00; bulled by Hargrave, 1/3 QH, Q3, 5:35; bulled by Hargrave, ¼ sack, Q4, 11:30).  He shared a penetration when he hit Stanley from behind on a pull (Q3, 12:51).  Of his 5 missed blocks, 3 were losses at the LoS.  He had 2 blocks in level 2 but did not deliver a pancake.  He scored 1 net point on 5 pulls.  His highlight was a combination block on Hargrave then S Gipson in level 2 (Q1, 14:52).

Scoring:  62 plays, 53 blocks, 5 missed, ½ penetration, 1/3 QH, .58 (1/3 + ¼) sacks, 1 illegal use of hands, 41.5 points (.67 per play).  That’s a D with adjustment.

I still believe Simpson and the Ravens are a good fit in terms of both team needs and coaching to eliminate his persistent penalty issue.  His 9 flags are 2nd on the team (Stanley 10) and he leads in both nullified yards (51) and stalled drives (5).  He’s a UFA this offseason, but I would not be surprised if he re-signs here.

Linderbaum:  Tyler had a difficult game as a pass blocker.  He was party to 5 pressure events (bulled by DT Hargrave, full pressure, Q2, 3:01; bulled by the stunting Bosa, 2/3 sack, Q2, 2:00; beaten right by spin DT McGill, 1/3 QH, Q3, 5:35; bulled by ILB Gregory, ¼ sack, Q4, 11:30; botched stunt handoff of ILB Warner with Cleveland, ½ pressure, Q4, 4:48).  His missed block was not a loss at the LoS (L2NB).  He had 3 blocks in level 2 but did not deliver a pancake.  He connected on all 3 of his pulls.  He had 2 highlight combination blocks.

Scoring: 62 plays, 56 blocks, 1 missed, 1.5 pressures, 1/3 QH, 0.92 (2/3 + ¼) sacks, 46.5 points (.75 per play).  That’s a D+ after adjustment.

Zeitler:  Kevin had his first grade of less than a B since week 6 vs the Titans in London.  His only negative event was shared pressure when he walked backward through the cone without an assignment (Q2, 11:04).   Of his 8 missed blocks, 3 were losses at the LoS including 6 misses on run plays.  He did not have any blocks in level 2 and delivered 1 pancake.  He missed on both of his pulls.  He had 1 highlight delivered when he flattened Bosa after he spun past Moses for a pressure.

Scoring:  52 plays, 43 blocks, 8 missed, ½ pressure, 42 points (.81 per play). That’s a C+ with adjustment.

Zeitler was replaced by Cleveland for the final 10 snaps.

Moses: Morgan again played well in a 46-snap outing.  He was party to 4 pressure events (bulled by DE Young, full pressure, Q1, 14:11; beaten by Bosa’s spin inside, full pressure, Q2, 0:10; bulled by Bosa to help flush Jackson, ½ pressure, Q3, 12:13; beaten outside by S Brown, 1/3 QH, Q3, 5:35).  Of his 2 missed blocks, 1 was a loss at the LoS.  He had 2 blocks in level 2 and delivered a pancake.  He was not assigned to pull.  He had 2 highlight combination blocks.

Scoring:  46 plays, 40 blocks, 2 missed, 2.5 pressures, 1/3 QH, 34 points (.74 per play).  That’s a B with adjustment.

Mekari:  Patrick relieved Stanley for 8 plays and made 7 blocks.  He had 1 block in level 2 and connected on 1 of his 2 pulls.  He left with a concussion following the first play of the 4th Quarter.

Faalele: Daniel played only 16 snaps but delivered solid results.  He was beaten outside by Bosa for a pressure (Q2, 11:40).  His missed block was a loss at the LoS.  He scored 12 out of a possible 16 points.

Cleveland: Ben entered as a 6th offensive lineman for 2 plays and replaced Zeitler for the final 10 snaps.  He was party to 2 pressure events (failed to pick up Warner, ¼ sack, Q4, 11:30; botched stunt handoff with Linderbaum, ½ pressure, Q4, 4:48) and scored 7.5 of a possible 12 points.
